Pink Flamingoes in the Camargue

Images of Provence by Sandra Raccanello

The elegant flamingo chooses to overwinter in the delta of the River Rhone, south of Arles. As the tourists, leave, they gather here in their thousands, where there’s plenty to eat in the shallow peaceful waters of the Camargue. In winter, there are few visitors to bother them although they have to endure the strong northwesterly Mistral wind that gets channelled down the Rhone valley.
