India’s colourful Holi Festival is celebrated all over India in the Spring, but Lathmar Holi takes place a week earlier than Holi this year on the 21st and 22nd March.
In common with with other Holi festivities, it involves plenty of coloured powder and dye. But in Barsana, a few hours south of Delhi, Lathmar Holi reaches a climax when women from the village beat the men (gops or shepherds ) from neighboring Nandgaon with traditional long staves called “Lathis”, from which this unique festival takes its name..
